Prospective readers will take note of how thick a work of prose is before they read it. Likewise, prospective moviegoers and theatergoers will want to know how long a production is before they sit to watch it. So how important are word and page count when writing fiction and drama? In this online-only presentation, Andrew McDowell will share insights into classifications by length associated with works of fiction, including flash fiction, short stories, novelettes, novellas, and novels, and he will discuss the importance of page count when writing plays and screenplays. Attendees will be encouraged to ponder how they classify works of writing and why, and how it might affect both their writing and how they market their work.

Andrew McDowell is the author of the fantasy novel Mystical Greenwood, which was a finalist in the 2019 American Fiction Awards, won the 2021 Maryland Writers’ Association Novel Contest, and was an honorable mention in the 2021 Top Shelf Magazine contest.
