Saturday, February 10th - 1:00-3:00 at the Finksburg Library Carroll Chapter Meeting:  How and When to Put Your Writing on a Sensory Diet

     At this meeting we'll have guest speaker, and Vice president of the Carroll Chapter, Amy Soscia present How and When to Put Your Writing on a Sensory Diet.

     One of the most consistent pieces of writing advice touted in articles and in writing craft books is for writers to add more sensory detail to their work. This ninety-minute workshop      will examine the body’s various sensory systems and how sensory information is processed. We will look at ways to add sensory details to enhance character development, add depth to scenes, and make the word on the page come alive. Writers will be encouraged to use a more balanced sensory approach to their writing while eliminating an over-dependence on sight.

     Participants will engage in several short experiential exercises and engage in one or two short writing exercises. We will review a variety of resources available and reserve time for questions and answers. 

     About the speaker: 

     Amy Soscia received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from New York University in Dance/Movement Therapy in the 1980s, a master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Mercy College in the1990s, and an MFA writing from Albertus Magnus College in 2014.

     After retiring from a very full career in healthcare working with psychiatric and brain injured patients, Amy now focuses her energies on writing, and on Park The Bark, LLC, her in-home dog boarding & daycare business. She has been nominated for a 2024 Pushcart award and was named Grand Prize Winner of the 2023 Tulip Tree Review Wild Women Story Contest. She has been published in 2023 Spring/Summer Tulip Tree Review, The Year’s Best Dog Stories 2021, Fredericksburg Literary & Arts Review, One Hundred Voices Vol. II, Down in The Dirt Magazine, The Westie Imprint, 898 Literary Journal, and Chicken Soup for the Soul: Recovering from Brain Injuries.
