Welcome to September 2026, Maryland Writers!
September is a spectacular month for many reasons. Schools are back in session. Summer gives way to fall. The foliage and weather changes. Inspiration abounds.
Even so, September this year is exceptional, I think. Twenty-five years ago this month our country changed forever in one of those moments that remains instantly frozen in time. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I first heard the news. I was stirring about my home preparing to teach my first class of my first semester ever, and I was crying. I don’t cry easily. Needless to say, we canceled classes and closed the school that sad day, and I didn’t start my lessons until the next week.
I hope you have a spare moment this month to pause in remembrance lest we forget the horrors of 9/11. People – mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, brothers, and sisters – jumping into smoke-filled heavens from above one hundred floors…
If that memory doesn’t stir your soul, you might want to ask yourself why. Either way, given the context of such a bountiful month spent within this most beautiful state of our magnificent Union, these memories are bound to draw your muse. For good or ill. Write it down. Get it out there. Let us hear you.
Because I see you. And I’m glad you’re here!

First Fridays is always stimulating, a contest entry is certain to rouse your creative ambitions, and our critique groups provide practical feedback as well as a rousing good time for all who attend.

Support your peers! MWA celebrates local authors in many ways, so take time to enjoy Maryland's authors by supporting our Teen Writers Anthology.
If your profile requires a bit of grooming, tend your Association business via our website. If your membership expires this month, be certain to renew it to continue enjoying all these wonderful resources.
Finally, when you enjoy all that MWA has to offer and you feel someone needs a shout-out, you can always nominate your local Leadership Superstar.
