Greetings, Magnificent MWA Wordsmith!
From the office of MWA's Executive Committee President, greetings and salutations! Welcome to May 2025! May is the perfect month to play a round of croquette on any one of Maryland’s many manicured lawns. It’s also a great month to dust off a kayak, sailboat, or inflatable for the year’s first trip onto the Bay, Patuxent, or Potomac where the fish abound, and the crabs are always biting (or, more accurately, pinching).
Personally, I favor long trike rides through the countryside – it’s always a visual and olfactory overload. From one bushel of blossoms to another, I pedal, nostrils flared, breathing deeply and feeling grateful that I’m here and not sweating my you-know-what off in my beloved home state of Texas. No matter the season, Maryland is absolutely inspiring - living here continually improves my understanding of Poe. Thus quoth the raven, “We love this place!”
This remark at last brings me around to official business. Did you know MWA throws a fantastic party for its constituents every year? Yup. It’s true. We call it “Brain to Bookshelf”. It’s our annual conference and it’s coming in October, so our wonderful conference committee is already working hard to plan another spectacular event. Currently, your input is required, as we are still brainstorming workshops and other programs. If you have input, send it to (surprise) [email protected]. I look forward to seeing you all there!

First Fridays is always stimulating, a contest entry is certain to rouse your creative ambitions, and our critique groups provide practical feedback as well as a rousing good time for all who attend.
MWA First Friday's Open Mic Night
Support your peers! MWA celebrates local authors in many ways, so take time to enjoy Maryland's authors by supporting our Teen Writers Anthology.
If your profile requires a bit of grooming, tend your Association business via our website. If your membership expires this month, be certain to renew it to continue enjoying all these wonderful resources.
Finally, when you enjoy all that MWA has to offer and you feel someone needs a shout-out, you can always nominate your local Leadership Superstar.
